THINGS TO KNOW WHEN STARTING A PROJECT
The quality of antique buying services can vary greatly. I recently visited a potential customer in NY. The customer located my business on the internet and called for an apointment. I arrived on time with a businss card, purchase contracts and proof of insurance. After a brief conversation with the customer he revealed to me that he had called several potential buyers that he located on his internet search. He was supprised the night prior to our appointemnt by a man claiming to have lost his telephone number but not his address. He arrived at 8pm on a sunday night. This gentelmen was very agressive after entering the apartment. He quickly went thru the apartment and put together a pile of inventory including 19c. foo dogs, a 19c barometer, several paintings and a pile of serling silver. He then started spewing out some very hight prices that he could get for this inventory in his shop if only the client would allow him to remove these items . The client while very anxious about the proposal after much proding agreed to the (consingment) arrangement. You have probably gussed by now that this buyer was a thief of sorts. He quickly claimed that he sold the inventory, however the prices he achieved were considerably lower than his earlier estimates. This customer was robbed. The buyer did not have his name or address on his business card, he never answered his telephone after he removed the inventory, he did not have a shop. The client was so embarrased that he never called the police. At Eaton's we don't remove anthing until we pay for it, we always answer the phone, we belong to the local Chamber of Commerce and several professional organizations. We own a building, trucks, trailers and our name is on all of them. Don't let this happen to you.
